The Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary is a high-performance hyper-telephoto zoom lens designed to offer exceptional optical quality in a compact and lightweight form. Part of Sigmas Contemporary range, it is crafted for photographers who need flexibility and portability without sacrificing image performance. This lens is especially suited for wildlife, sports, and travel photography, offering an extended zoom range and reliable operation in a variety of conditions.
Lightweight Design with Advanced Build Quality
One of the standout features of this lens is its compact and lightweight design, which makes it far more comfortable for handheld shooting over extended periods. Despite its portable size, the lens includes a robust brass bayonet mount for durability and features dust and splash-proof sealing on the lens mount to handle challenging weather conditions. The front and rear lens elements are coated with a water and oil-repellent finish to help keep the glass clear and easy to maintain.
Superior Optics for Sharp, Clean Images
The lens uses a combination of one FLD (F Low Dispersion) and three SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements. This optical configuration reduces chromatic aberration and ensures sharpness, contrast, and clarity across the zoom range. A Super Multi-Layer Coating is applied to minimise flare and ghosting, which enhances image quality even in difficult backlit situations.
Autofocus and Manual Control
The Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) provides fast, quiet, and precise autofocus, making the lens ideal for capturing moving subjects. For greater control, the lens includes a full-time manual focus function that allows the user to switch instantly to manual focus by rotating the focus ring. This is particularly helpful in situations that require fine-tuned adjustments.
Stabilisation and Intelligent Tracking
The Optical Stabiliser (OS) system features an acceleration sensor to improve performance and precision. It offers two modes: Mode 1 is designed for general photography, while Mode 2 is optimised for panning and is well suited for motorsports and similar applications. In Mode 2, the lens compensates for vertical, horizontal, and diagonal movement, even when the lens is tilted. This results in smoother panning and better subject tracking, making it an effective tool for continuous action photography.
Teleconverter and Extended Reach
Included with the lens is a 1.4x teleconverter, specially designed to match the optical performance of Sigma’s Global Vision lenses. It includes one SLD element and features the same dust- and splash-proof construction as the lens. When used together, the lens and teleconverter maintain autofocus performance at f/8, allowing photographers to extend their reach without compromising focus speed or accuracy.
Additional Features and Compatibility
A zoom lock switch allows the zoom ring to be fixed at any focal length, which is particularly useful when shooting with the lens pointed upwards or downwards, or during long exposures. The lens also features a rounded 9-blade diaphragm that produces smooth, attractive background blur. A detachable tripod socket is included for added stability during mounted shooting sessions.
The Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Contemporary is compatible with Sigmas USB Dock, enabling firmware updates and custom adjustments such as focus settings and OS behaviour. It also supports Sigma’s Mount Conversion Service for users who wish to switch between compatible camera systems.
